Where
can I find the Shrinky Dinks Kits I used as a child?
The kits of years past were
manufactured by the major toy companies of the time, such as, Milton Bradley,
Colorforms, Western Publishing, Skyline Toys and others. Those kits are no
longer being produced and the existing intact kits are in the hands of Toy
Collectors and Dealers, and we have found them selling from $20.00 to $75.00
on the internet.
Which of
the Shrinky Dinks plastics you make now were used in the kits of years ago?
Our Frosted Ruff
N' Ready is the plastic that was used in most of the kits, and is the one we
recommend for use with children, (Item D100-10A) because you can use any
colored pencil, acrylic paints or any other permanent media.
Can I
run Shrinky Dinks Plastic through my computer printer?
Yes, but you must use the Shrinky Dinks plastic designed for Ink
Jet printers (Item D600-6A). The inks used in most printers are water based and meant for paper,
but the coating that is applied to Shrinky Dinks Ink Jet plastic allows the
water based inks to adhere. Without
the special coating, it would be similar to painting water colors on a
plastic bag, it would eventually dry, but it would never be permanent. We recommend using the Ink Jet Shrinky
Dinks sheets in HP, Lexmark and Cannon printers. Epson have been tested and do not perform
well with our Ink Jet plastic. Do not
use Laser printers of any type when using our Shrinky Dinks sheets, the heat
associated with Laser printers will produce poor results.
Can you
use Shrinky Dinks in a copy machine?
Yes. If you have
multiple images to make and don't want to trace or draw, you can run our
Frosted Ruff N' Ready plastic through a standard copy machine. We recommend
using a lower speed machine (10 to 12 copies per minute), and feeding the
plastic one sheet at a time through the manual feed end of the machine. We DO
NOT recommend using High Speed, Color or Laser copiers with our Shrinky
Dinks...They get too hot and may melt the plastic inside of the machine.
What is
the best pencil to use on the Frosted Ruff N' Ready?
ANY colored
pencil will work...but for artistic results, we recommend Berol Prisma Color,
or Faber Castell. Remember, the colors intensify and get brighter after
baking. DO NOT use charcoal based pencils - they really smear. Color Crayola
puts out a low cost pencil and is available at most discount stores. DO NOT
use water based markers or crayons.
What do
I do when the plastic starts to roll and curl?
Enjoy the show!!
The curling and moving is part of the "magical" process. The
plastic is starting to shrink at that point. Leave the piece in the oven to
continue shrinking. When it lays flat, give it another 15 seconds and your
creation is done!
What do
I do if my Shrinky Dink creation sticks to itself as it's curling?
Don't panic. The
plastic will at times do this. AN ADULT should reach into the oven using chop
sticks, Popsicle sticks or even a couple of forks, gently move the stuck
portion of your Shrinky Dink apart. After it's gently moved apart, close the
oven and let the piece continue its shrinking process.
What
kind of pan do I use to bake my Shrinky Dinks?
Any type of
cookie sheet or oven safe pan is fine. We do not recommend using the kind of cookie
sheet that has an air layer in between the top and bottom of the sheet.
What
happens if I take it out too early and it isn't completely done, can I reheat
it?
Yes. Put the
piece back into the oven and let it continue to bake. It will take a minute or
two longer to get it hot enough to be soft, but then it will continue to
shrink and flatten out. You can also do this to reheat a piece for bending
into shapes, like napkin rings.
Can I
use a heat gun to shrink my Shrinky Dinks?
You can, however we
do not recommend it. Using a conventional or toaster oven is safer and more
effective for even shrinkage. CHILDREN SHOULD NEVER USE A HEAT GUN AND ADULT
SUPERVISION IS REQUIRED DURING BAKING.
Where in
my area can I find Shrinky Dinks Shrinkable Plastic Sheets?
You can find our
plastics in Hobby Lobby and Michaels Craft Stores. On our Home Page you will
find a button that says "WHAT’S NEW", click there to see what
fun things other companies are doing with our SHRINKY DINKS.
Can
Shrinky Dinks be used in the microwave?
NO. Shrinky Dinks
are not to be used in a microwave oven.
